Government Provider Management System (GPMS): An Explainer for Aged Care Providers

20/06/23
Resources

The Government Provider Management System (GPMS) is the Government’s new IT system for aged care providers. Many providers are already using the GPMS to access information about Star Ratings. But, according to the Department of Health and Aged Care, the GPMS will soon be expanded to become “a master source of information across the aged care system”. Here’s what you need to know.

What is the GPMS?

The Government Provider Management System (GPMS) is the Government’s new IT system for aged care providers. The GPMS is designed to replace the current 20-year-old National Approved Provider System (NAPS).

The purpose of the GPMS is to “establish a modern system to give aged care providers, government, and older

Australians access to up-to-date information on the quality and safety of aged care services”.

As at June 2023, the GPMS is available to residential aged care providers only. Home care providers will gain access to the GPMS in July 2023.

What Is GPMS Used For?

As at June 2023, residential aged care providers can already use the GPMS to access Star Ratings previews.

The GPMS will soon be expanded to enable providers to report on:

  • Quality Indicators
  • Provider operations
  • 24/7 registered nurse requirements.

Benefits of the GPMS for Aged Care Providers

According to the Department of Health and Aged Care, the GPMS will:

  • allow aged care providers to self-manage, view, and maintain their records with the Government
  • support provider reporting requirements
  • improve information sharing between the aged care and healthcare systems to deliver the right care the first time.

How to Access the GPMS

Prepare by making sure your details are up to date in both the My Aged Care Service and Support Portal and GPMS. Then, if you’re a residential aged care provider and haven’t logged on yet:

  • log on to GPMS
  • assign roles for ‘Organisation Administrators’
  • check your organisation and contact details are up to date in GPMS.

If you are an Organisation’s Administrator, ensure that access and roles are correctly set up. There are currently two types of access roles in GPMS:

  • Organisation Administrator – manages access for users.
  • Star Ratings Reviewer – can preview your organisation’s Star Ratings.

More user types will become available in the future.
